In case you didn’t know, November is American Diabetes Month®. So we at MDigitalLife thought it would only be fitting to dig into our plethora of data to see what physicians and other Health Care Providers (HCPs) have been saying about Diabetes.

One of the questions I had going into this was whether these awareness months had a real effect on conversation within the medical community. It seems apparent that the general public would jump onto the awareness month bandwagon and as a result conversation volumes would increase, but do doctors (and other HCPs) also capitalize on the increased awareness?

For this chart, “Physicians” are only physicians we have matched NPI to a digital presence, while “All MDL” are all HCP and physician handles we have matched to a digital presence. All conversation data is pulled from Twitter.

As you can see in the chart above, both physician and HCP conversation clearly spike in November 2012 and November 2013. Not surprisingly, the spike is more pronounced in overall MDL conversation as that includes non MD HCPs as well. Coming in second in conversation volume, was the American Diabetes Association’s 74th Scientific Sessions  (#2014ADA). While conversation was much smaller for overall MDL conversation, #2014ADA actually beat #DiabetesMonth by a tiny margin among physician only conversation. This is a trend we commonly see as physicians are extremely active on social media during relevant medical conferences.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into the #DiabetesMonth conversation.

After seeing these spikes in conversation around American Diabetes Month®, I was curious how much of the conversation was distributed throughout the month and how much occurred on November 14 (World Diabetes Day). I pulled the conversation volume of physicians in November 2012 and 2013 and laid them on top of each other to see if there were any corresponding spikes in conversation.

Interestingly, the clear winner in this analysis was World Diabetes Day. There was a profound jump in conversation in both 2012 and 2013 on November 14 and the majority of the conversation centered around #WDD and related hashtags. In fact, on November 14th 2013 there were 174 tweets from physicians, nearly 100 more tweets than the next highest spike on November 19th.

So what is the takeaway from all of these numbers? Well, physicians certainly engage in American Diabetes Month® and World Diabetes Day conversation, though the spike is not quite as prominent as it is in all HCP conversation. Clearly these are valuable tools for raising Diabetes awareness and a great opportunity for anyone passionate about Diabetes to engage with the medical community in conversation.
